The Andalusia Lions Club is once again partnering with the Covington County Child Advocacy Center to raise funds for the organization.
This is the second year the organizations have teamed up to raise money for the organization that provides services to children and non-offending parents of child sex and physical abuse, primarily through forensic interviews.
The Lions Club will hold its second Lions Day on Sat., April 22, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Marvin’s Building Supply. During the event, Lions will collect old and or used eyeglasses; accept donations for the Covington County Child Advocacy Center and sell brooms and mops for local eyesight preservation.
In the summer of 2015, Opp native Jim Lawrence sent an email to Andalusia’s John Vick informing him of a special celebration commemorating the end of World War I.
The event, called the “Keep the Spirit of ’45 Alive” was to be held in August at the Air Force Armament Museum.
In John Vick fashion, he quickly organized a committee of locals including John Thompson, Sammy Glover, Kenneth Johnson, Kendra Majors, Greg White, Emilee Gage, Ben Bowden, Chrissy Duffy, Maggie Jones and Brian Foshee, to seek out local World War II veterans who would like to attend the event and businesses to sponsor a bus and banners honoring those who served. The committee took more than a dozen World War II veterans to the celebration, which included Reveille, lectures on different aspects of the war, a re-enactment of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima and more.
But possibly the greatest thing to come out the event other than the fellowship was a three-hour long video of interviews with World War II veterans who were honored that day. Read More>

The Andalusia City Council was the first to approve the company’s request Tuesday night. The company is expected to meet the same approval from both the Covington County Commission and Gov. Robert Bentley.
“Shaw Industries has selected the Andalusia plant to make some significant investments for new equipment,” Mayor Earl Johnson told council members Tuesday. “The investment Shaw is going to make in this plant is very significant and will secure the plant in Andalusia and Covington County for many, many years. “We have been working on this about for about six or nine months,” Johnson said. “PowerSouth, Southeast Alabama Gas and others have been working with us, making improvements in what we are able to provide in terms of energy...Read More>
The Andalusia Police Department has begun “accepting” arrest warrants for its 9th Annual Arrest A Friend fundraiser, set from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the Court Square in Andalusia on Thurs., April 6.
The event raises funds for the Covington county Relay for Life.
To sign a warrant, stop by the APD to sign a warrant for arrest. Alternately, stop by the warrant table on the day of the event on the Court Square. Warrants signed after are $2 each, and have a minimum bond of $10 with a maximum amount of $100. (Exceptions are APD’s Most Wanted.) APD will not travel outside of the Andalusia city limits for this fundraiser.
In addition to Arrest A Friend, the Army National Guard will have their rock climb on site. An added event this year allows supporters to “challenge” an APD officer to climb.
All proceeds are donated to the Covington County Relay for Life – American Cancer Society. For questions, please call (334) 222-1155 ext. 3106 or ext. 3104.
